‘.XXX’ Domain Name Under Consideration Again

(CNSNews.com) - The organization in charge of approving Internet domains has reintroduced a controversial proposal to create a domain registry specifically for pornographic content.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in June 2005 approved the creation of the “.xxx” domain. But in May 2006, the organization voted against a contract with domain distributor ICM Registry, in part because of outcry from conservative family groups.

dotMobi Carries Momentum of Successful Domain Registration into 2007

.mobi Sites Going Live from Variety of Companies and Organizations

Building on a successful launch that has generated more than 330,000 name registrations to date, dotMobi, the official worldwide registry for the .mobi domain, enters the new year poised to continue providing consumers with the best mobile Internet experience possible. In just three months of open registration, numerous popular, practical and niche .mobi sites have went live worldwide as companies and content developers recognize the benefits of providing on-the-go mobile users with information and services.

The dotMobi Site Showcase provides consumers with a sampling of .mobi sites in three categories — Corporate, Information & News and Entertainment & Travel — at showcase.mtld.mobi. Businesses large and small are encouraged to submit their .mobi site for display in the Showcase and to be featured as the “dotMobi Site of the Week” at dotmobi.mobi/siteform.

“In the short time that .mobi names have been available to the public, we have been pleasantly surprised by the number of sites going live,” said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi. “We expected that large companies would see the benefit in building a .mobi site to provide their customers with a great mobile experience, and we’re confident we will continue to see more .mobi sites from major organizations in 2007. What was somewhat unexpected - and great to see - is the high-quality content that has been developed by
smaller, niche sites utilizing the .mobi domain as a tool for building a presence and providing information and services to mobile users.”

Content developers and .mobi domain owners have an opportunity to showcase their sites at the first-ever Webby Mobile Awards, which recognize the growth and quality of content being developed for mobile devices. These awards will be presented at the 11th Annual Webby Awards in June 2007. Sites built on .mobi’s open standards can be submitted for consideration in three categories: Listings & Updates, News & Entertainment and Mobile Marketplace (for sites selling products and services). Mobile sites can be submitted until January 26, 2007, at www.webbyawards.com/entries/.

And to ensure that quality content is developed for the mobile Internet, dotMobi has implemented a first of its kind premium name application process. Organizations and content developers are invited to submit proposals for four premium .mobi domains: “news.mobi”, “ringtones.mobi”, “sports.mobi” and “weather.mobi”. The deadline for
applications is February 16, 2007. To apply for these premium .mobi domains, visit pc.mtld.mobi/switched/premiumsales.html.
