The Best Company To Work For, Google

If only there was a play-off system. Then perhaps the world would know if Google deserved to knock Genentech off the pedestal in Fortune magazine’s annual ranking of America’s “best companies to work for.'’

Google, the Mountain View leader in Internet search, debuted at No. 1 in its first appearance in the list, a fact that may have more to do with the methodology of the rankings than a sudden surge in workplace bliss. Genentech, the South San Francisco pioneer of biotechnology, slipped from No. 1 in 2006 to No. 2, according to the rankings released Monday.

In a sign that No. 2 really does try harder, Genentech touted its position in a news release. San Jose’s Network Appliance also did some boasting of its rise to No. 6.

Google, meanwhile, played it cool. Nothing about the workplace kudos.

Working for Google has famously proved an enriching experience for many, given its rising stock value. But the 10th annual rankings are based on a combination of factors: two-thirds weight is given to responses on a 57-question survey of 400 randomly selected employees at each company by the Great Place To Work Institute, a San Francisco research and consulting group.

“It’s not about perks and benefits, although that plays into it,'’ said Katie Popp, a manager at the institute. “But at the heart of the great place to work is the existence of a high level of trust.'’

The remaining one-third reflects Fortune’s assessment of each company’s compensation and benefits, its demographic makeup and culture.

Google, Genentech and Network Appliance were the only valley firms to make the top 10, and Cisco Systems just missed at No. 11. Other valley companies to make the Top 100 were Adobe Systems (31), Intuit (33) and Yahoo (44).

In part, the companies are self-selected. The 100 best were chosen from 446 that opted in for the survey. Popp said their “confidentiality process'’ forbids identifying those who didn’t make the list — say, the bottom 10.

Domain Name Registration Increases Over 350% From 2005, Says Dot VN

San Diego, California - (Cheap Web Hosting Directory) - January 11, 2006 - Domain name registration company, Dot VN, Inc., the official authorized global registrar for the Country of Vietnam, has reported that the total number of .vn domain names registered by the Company via online has increased over 350% since 2005.

New .vn registrations under Dot VN management grew from 919 total domain names registered in 2005 to over 4,100 for the 2006 year. Wiki, The New Domain Name Rush; What The Buyers Don’t Want Anyone to Know

Wiki domain names, the new game in town for domain name brokers and investers. What they don’t want you to hear.

Baltimore, Maryland (PRWeb) January 14, 2007 — Most of the good domain names were taken during the domain name rush of the 90’s. Even into this millennium names were still being registered at an alarming rate. So much so that even names having no meaning whatsoever were registered by people in the hopes that they could get a slice of the wealth some people were generating with domain names.

Case in point, in 2001 the domain men dot com sold for 2 million dollars, thats 2,000,000 for a domain name. Or how about the person who bought Business dot com for $150,000 in 1997 and then turned around and sold it for 7.5 million.

The next rush for domain wealth came with the LLL domains, that’s 3 letter domains to those of you that are new to the business. Which then turned into numbers and letters. I.E. 123 etc. Then came the blogs. Oh yes the Blog revolution. If you registered a decent name with the word blog at the end of it, more then likely you had a gold mine. Now it’s blog this and blog that.

So now we are in another cycle of the domain name game. Everyone is looking for that domain that will convert to some big $$$. And just when we thought that the domain business just might be fizzling, along came wiki’s. That’s right, the new game in town, it’s wiki this and wiki that. Some of the bigger domain investors knew this a couple of years ago. Even big companies like Nascar got in on the game early.

Not only does the name roll off your tongue(remember that pop song from the 80’s, wiki, wiki, wiki?), it also has a meaning in the computer world. A wiki is a type of website that allows visitors to easily add, remove, and or edit and change some available content, sometimes without the need for registration. More and more people are starting to realize the goldmine that Wiki’s are starting to become.

For instance if you were to do a search for the term wiki on google you would get over 200 million results. That’s 2 hundred Million with a capital M. What this shows more then anything else is that Wiki’s are headed the same way that blogs did, lots and lots of people are investing in and installing Wiki websites and domain names.

Even now most well used terms with the word wiki(just like blog), at the end of the domain name are gone. Will wiki’s be the next ticket to the domain name rush? Who knows, but one thing is for certain, wiki’s are being registered at rates almost comparable to the original domain name rush. And if you miss out on this one, well let’s just say you will have no one to blame but yourself.

Open Directory Project (DMOZ) Coming Back From the Dead?

Over the past few weeks there has been some discussion in the forums about how the Open Directory Project has not been working at all. Yesterday there was an update posted on the ODP home page saying;

The Importance of Content for SEO

Often times we get so caught up in marketing our site and making it aesthetically pleasing, we forget one of, if not THE most important part of SEO. Content. The search engines can not see pictures, so the only way to tell them what your site is all about is to provide that information to them via text. But why is it so difficult to put text on our sites?

During the creation of a site, we often care more about how it looks than how it functions. Flash, in my opinion, can be used to create some of the most beautiful sites out there. We get so drawn into making nice layouts with neat animations, we completely neglect the fact that we are building a site for the world, not just us.

The content on your site should actually be the first thing you think of when optimizing it. You need to convey to the search engines that your site is worthy of ranking, and that you are here to offer something to the masses. I often give this advice to customers, and get a great deal of fearful feedback. I hear a lot of “I don’t even know what to write.” Well, your site is an extension of your business/service/whatever, and as such you are likely to be well versed in that area. But I think people get caught up in the idea that the text is going to be placed on the site, promoting the attention to variables such as what font to use, what color, how it will look, etc.

The best advice that I can give in reference to thinking of text, is to close your site, use notepad (not Word. This creates problems when deciding to copy and paste), or a pen and paper (these do exist you know), and just put your thoughts to reality. Just write. Write about your business, yourself, your products, the history of your company, whatever. Just write. Before you know it, you will have well over 800 words of cryptic information all about your industry. As I write this, I am not thinking about my blog or my site, but only what I am trying to convey to you, the reader. Once you have all that information, organize it. Make it mean something, and make sense. Given enough thought, it will not be too difficult to come up with at least 500 words, which is a good amount of text to be placed on a website.

Once the content is on the site, you can obviously tweak it here and there to make proper use of your search terms (this will most likely happen anyway. You are writing on or about the same subject as your site, right?). And once that is done, you can then figure out what the layout, spacing, font, and all the other wonderful cosmetics the online world can offer will be.

As with all things online, this is easier written than done. But try this method out and see if it helps. To me, writing is my very weakest point, and this helps a great deal. Content is so very important to search engine optimization, and should be treated as such.
